What isn't covered

Important information about what isn't covered by Standard Life health insurance.

What we don't cover

Therapies not covered by your plan
  • If your plan doesn't cover a certain type of treatment, we won't pay out claims for it
  • We only cover treatment that takes place while your plan is in force. Cover stops from the day you cancel your plan - even if you're in the middle of treatment at the time
General exclusions
  • We don't cover treatment of chronic conditions, cosmetic surgery, regular renal dialysis, treatment of alcohol and drug abuse, rehabilitation and treatment of HIV and AIDS
Long-term illnesses
  • We don't cover the ongoing treatment of long-term medical conditions
  • However, we will cover initial diagnosis and stabilising treatment or any sudden worsening of an eligible condition
Conditions you've had in the past
  • Generally, we won't cover medical conditions you have had in the past five years
  • If you declare your medical history when you apply (full medical underwriting) we will apply any exclusions at the start. Otherwise we will wait until a claim arises (moratorium) to review your medical history
  • If you're switching, we will ask you some questions about your recent health when deciding whether you can transfer on the same underwriting terms as you had before
Full details of all exclusions are included in the terms and conditions you receive when you take out a plan with us, though you can ask to see these before then if you would like to.
